Dentistry Centered On Prevention

A healthy, beautiful smile is not hard to come by these days. It is however not a guarantee to any of us. To keep your smile looking good takes work. At Oakville dental office, Dr. Max and his team encourage patients to develop and maintain healthy habits at home so that you can protect yourself from dental disease. We educate and show exactly how you can prevent oral problems.

Teeth Cleaning:

Teeth Cleaning appointments that are booked with the hygienist are designed for prevention and are called prophylaxis. While you maintain your oral hygiene at home, the twice a year visit to your hygienist to have a professional cleaning is vital to your long term health. At these appointments, the hygievent uses special instruments to remove plaque and tartar that may have accumulated on the surfaces of the teeth as well has those hard to reach places. Dental tartar or plaque is impossible to remove with routine brushing and flossing. Since tartar is known to harbour bacteria its removal is important to the prevention of cavities and gum disease.

Treating Gum Disease:

Patients who visit our office may know that they have gum irritation or bleeding. However, many do not know. During your routine exam the dentist may identify areas that inflammation is present. The gums could have deep pockets that have formed around the teeth, or they could actually be receding. In that case treatment will be planned to remove this bacteria and clean the pockets do that the gum disease doesn’t progress. Some patients are able to reverse the damage caused by gum disease on their own, if not there are many options for treating gum disease. Untreated gum disease can also result in bad breath

Oral Cancer Screening:

Velscope is a device that more readily detects abnormal tissues due to the use of a specific light. Dr. Max is happy to include velscope in his clinic to screen patients. Certain people have a higher risk for oral cancer, but screening is important for all of us due to the seriousness of this disease. Oral cancer if detected early has a very good prognosis for survival.
